Did you know that there is a difference between therapy and life coaching??

 

Maybe you are under the impression that there isn’t a difference?

 

If you have ever considered therapy or life coaching (or both!), it is essential to know that there is a big difference between them. 

 

THERAPY and COACHING is not the same, and both offerings serve a different purpose.

 

So, what’s the difference between a life coach and a therapist?

 

Let’s explore the differences to make an informed decision on what would best be of services to you to meet your mental well-being and life goals.

Therapy vs. Coaching

The differentiation of therapy vs. coaching continues to be an ever-evolving discussion in deciding which service is best. Although these services seemingly overlap in today’s time, traditional distinctions between the two are as follow:

Focus:

  • Therapy has traditionally been more past and present process-focused.

  • Coaching is more present and future-focused.

Role:

  • Therapists may work with clients to set goals and make changes, primarily grounded in treating trauma, addictions, grief, mental illness, and overcoming abuse to name a few. 

A therapist may also help in areas of life that overlap with the focus of a life coach, but they can also specifically do the following:

  • Treat clinical anxiety or depression, with the ultimate goal of achieving better mental health.

  • Help you heal from past trauma.

  • Understand behavior patterns and triggers for self-destructive behaviors.

  • Explore relationships like divorces, estrangements, or toxic relationships/friendships

  • Help evaluate your unconscious and subconscious mind.

  • Coaches primary goals are to help clients look at where they are, where they want to be, and how to get from point A to point B.

Examples of a few ways a life coach can help you:

  • Mentorship and accountability

  • Reduce procrastination

  • Change your thinking and deliver an accurate outside perspective.

  • Make an action plan to initiate positive change.

  • Improve your self-esteem and confidence.

  • Question limiting beliefs about your potential.

  • Identify, set, and achieve goals.

The main difference between a coach and a therapist is that a therapist works with the past and deep, unresolved emotional pain.  Coaching encourages, equips, and empowers.

Education:

  • The practice of therapy requires the minimum of a Master’s degree and supervision of clinical practices.

Because therapists have a specialized degree and clinical training, they have an extensive foundation of knowledge about the mind, biology, and human behavior. They are qualified to help clients in these sensitive areas, and, more importantly, they are properly trained on how to handle the volatile nature of these situations.

  • Coaching requires no specific qualifications and certification options are purely voluntary.

Funding:

  • Therapy may be private pay or paid for by health insurance and special programming.  ​

  • Coaching is paid for privately by the individual client or by their sponsoring organization.
